The fuel oil spilled by the Volgoneft-212 oil tanker, which crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15, was intended for transfer to the tanker FIRN, part of the “shadow fleet” of aging ships that Russia uses to circumvent the G7-imposed oil export price cap, Agentstvo Media reported on Monday, citing the Ukraine War Environmental Consequences Work Group (UWECWG).
The group also noted that the Volgoneft-109 tanker, which issued a distress signal on December 17, was likely bound for the FIRN. The ship was rescued in time and sheltered at an anchorage in the Port of Kavkaz.
The oil transported by both ships was likely intended for delivery to Indian refineries, the UWECWG’s experts said.
